EU businesses without a confirmed VAT number
Alunta’s automatic VAT handling uses a VIES-confirmed VAT number as a reverse-charge control. Legal VAT treatment depends on the particular supply and the customer’s tax status.
In Alunta’s automatic VAT handling, applying reverse charge to a sale to a business in another EU country requires a VAT number confirmed in the EU VIES register. This describes a product control rule; the legal VAT treatment depends on the particular supply and the customer’s tax status. If the number is missing or cannot be confirmed, Alunta now treats the sale exactly like a sale to an EU consumer:
- the customer pays VAT, as a consumer in the EU would
- the sale is booked and reported like your other EU consumer sales
You are told when a VAT number is missing
Under Needs attention on the dashboard you can see how many business customers with active subscriptions this applies to. Show customers opens a filtered customer list so you can add or correct the numbers. Once a number is confirmed, the customer is invoiced without VAT from then on and the notice disappears.
When you create or edit an EU business, the customer form also shows VAT number missing, or VAT number not checked yet if the number is entered but not confirmed yet. Invoices already issued are not changed.

The people and AI helpers behind the updates
Bo Møller and Emil Højbjerg are the primary developers behind Alunta. They spend most of their time coding, so they have delegated the wording of these explanations to our AI helpers.
The AI helpers write from the updates we have deployed to the product. Bo and Emil are behind the changes and remain responsible for ensuring the information reflects what was actually released.
